Some of the most valuable things in a Garden City house lie on the floor. A Persian in the front living room, a Turkish runner in the center hall, a rug that came from a grandparent's home: these pieces often stay in the same place for decades.
They need a slower, gentler process than a machine-made rug, and we treat them that way from the moment we roll them up.
Before we take a rug, we look at it together and talk about what cleaning can realistically do.
Inspection comes first, on both sides of the rug. We note the knot density, the warp and weft underneath, the ends, any moth damage and any earlier repairs. That record protects you and guides our work.
Then the dye test. Every main color is tested with a damp white cloth. Stable colors mean a normal hand-wash; a color that moves means we change the method or talk to you before going on.
Fine grit is the hidden enemy. A rug that has sat on hardwood for years holds sand-like soil packed down at the base of the pile, and every footstep grinds it against the wool. We remove that dry soil thoroughly before any water touches the pile.
Washing happens by hand using gentle solutions, followed by a full rinse and slow, flat drying. Rushing a hand-knotted rug through drying is what causes brown stains and sour odor, so we do not rush.
If the rug has an appraisal or papers, feel free to show us. We do not need them, but the history helps. Sunlight from large front windows may have faded one side; cleaning will not restore that color, and we will tell you so.
About a week later the rug comes home. We lay it back on its pad and suggest turning it once or twice a year so light and foot traffic even out.
Moths are worth watching in a house with fine wool rugs, particularly under furniture that rarely moves, such as a sofa or piano. Moth larvae prefer dark, undisturbed corners. When we inspect a rug, we look for the bare tracks they leave and let you know if we find any.
Pets are another concern. Urine can shift wool dyes over time, so blot any accident with plain water and a white towel right away and let us know about it at pickup.
