At the plant, both the pile side and the underside are examined. Thin areas, moth tracks, loose ends and old repairs are noted, and if something matters, we call you before we wash.

Colors are checked one at a time with a damp white cloth. Many older rugs hold their dyes well. A few, often deep reds, can bleed. Any shade that transfers to the cloth means a gentler wash, or a phone call to you first.

Before the rug ever gets wet, it is dusted thoroughly. Hand-knotted rugs hide surprising amounts of fine grit at the base of the knots, and taking it out is the best thing anyone can do for the wool.

Washing is gentle and by hand, with a long, clean rinse, followed by slow drying with moving air so no brown lines or musty smell appear later.

Kilims and other flatweaves are thinner and can pull out of shape when wet. We block them square while they dry so they lie flat at home.

When the dog or cat has an accident, press a towel dampened in cool water onto it, no scrubbing, and let our driver know.

Expect it back in seven to ten days.
