First, the tag and the test. A code of W, S, WS or X on the tag tells us whether a fabric tolerates water, solvent, both or neither. We still dab a concealed area, because old pieces often lose their tags or have been recovered.

Damask, linen and velvet are common in formal rooms here. They can shrink, water-mark or flatten if they get too wet, so we work with low moisture, soft brushes and a careful rinse, then extract thoroughly.

Family pieces have different problems. Armrests and headrests darken with skin oil. Dining seats pick up food and grease. A hall bench collects whatever lands on it as people come and go. Each problem is matched with its own solution rather than one harsh product for everything.

Some antiques simply should not be wet-cleaned. When our test says so, we tell you plainly and suggest what can be done instead. We would rather leave a valuable chair alone than gamble with it.

Dining sets often come up before a holiday. Doing all of them in one session keeps every seat the same shade, so no single chair looks brighter than its neighbors at the table.
