Persian rugs are woven into the life of many Great Neck homes. Some came with the family from overseas, some were bought on trips, and some have lain in the same dining room for forty years. Many are hand-knotted wool; others are silk or silk-and-wool.
Rugs like these should never be scrubbed on the floor with a carpet machine. They come to our plant, where they are handled by hand from start to finish.
Tell us what you know about the rug when we pick it up. The story helps.
Each rug is laid out and studied, face and back. We note the weave, the condition of the warp threads, the fringe and edges, and any past repairs, moth tracks or thin areas. If we find something you should know, we tell you before cleaning.
Color stability is checked one dye at a time. Most traditional Persian dyes hold, but reds and blues in some rugs can move, and silk often needs special handling. If a color is at risk, the method changes or we call you.
Next, the grit. A hand-knotted rug traps fine soil around the base of its knots, and every step grinds it into the wool. We dust the rug thoroughly before any water is used, which is the single biggest help to an older piece.
The wash is done by hand, with mild, eco-safe solutions and plenty of clean rinse water. Drying is slow and even, flat, with steady air. Rushing that stage is what causes brown lines and sour smells.
Silk rugs get a quieter process still: less agitation, cooler water and extra attention to the fringe, which on silk rugs is often the first part to weaken.
If a pet has an accident on a fine rug, blot it with cold water and a white cloth, avoid rubbing, and mention it at pickup. Urine can change wool dyes over time, so sooner is better.
Buildings are no obstacle. We coordinate pickup and return through the doorman or super, and we carry rugs rolled and protected.
Most rugs are home again within about a week.
Runners on staircases and in long hallways are common in older Great Neck houses. Many are hand-knotted and fastened with rods or tacks. Tell us if a runner is installed; we will talk through whether it can be removed safely for cleaning or should be handled another way.
Many Great Neck families rotate rugs between rooms or roll some up for a season. Before storing a hand-knotted rug, have it cleaned, then wrap it in breathable cloth rather than plastic. Stored dirty, a wool rug is exactly what moths look for.
