Before washing, the rug goes through a dusting step that shakes loose the dry grit. That alone can remove a surprising amount of sand from a rug near the front door.

Salt gets special attention. It leaves fibers stiff and dull, and a thorough rinse is the only thing that removes it. After drying, a salt-damaged wool rug feels soft again.
