Area Rug Cleaning in Upper East Side, Manhattan

In a prewar apartment on the Upper East Side, a rug often does three jobs at once. It warms up a parquet floor, it softens the sound for the downstairs neighbor, and it holds the room's look together. Dining room rugs, long hall runners and play rugs in kids' rooms all fall under this service.

We take the rug with us. Back at our facility it is soaked, washed, rinsed and laid flat to dry, which gets out the grit sitting deep at the base of the knots. A rug cleaned on your floor never gets that far.

Try the corner test. Fold a corner back and bend the rug so you can see down to the backing. Gray dust or sandy grit there means it is time, even if the top looks fine.

Watch the fringe and the walking path, too. Brown, matted fringe near a doorway or a dull lane where the dog runs to the door each morning are early signs.

Upper East Side families often own a mix: a sturdy wool rug in the living room, a cotton flatweave in the kitchen, a soft viscose rug in a teenager's room. A quick test on each one, done before washing, shows the fiber and whether its colors hold.

Kids' rooms bring their own problems, such as slime, markers, glitter and spilled milk. Those spots are worked on separately in the wash.

Urine and odor from pets get treated while the rug is in the wash, so the smell is removed rather than masked.

The fringe is washed and combed out at the end.

Expect the rug back in roughly seven days. When it returns, the crew unrolls it where it belongs and helps nudge the chairs and table back on top.
