On the Upper West Side, a rug often marks the heart of the room. There is the play rug where the kids build towers, the runner in the long prewar hallway and the big wool rug under the sofa where the dog likes to stretch out after a walk in Riverside Park.
Because those rugs see so much daily life, we take them away and wash them properly. At our facility a rug can be soaked all the way through, rinsed until the water is clear and dried flat. A quick clean on the living room floor cannot do that.
Getting the rug out is part of the job. In a walk-up brownstone, we roll it and carry it down the stairs. In a co-op, we work inside the building's delivery hours and use the service elevator.
Pick up one corner and give it a gentle shake over a bare floor. If a little cloud of grit falls out, there is soil packed inside the rug that is wearing down the fibers each time someone steps on it.
Smell is the other clue. A rug that holds a doggy or musty odor, especially on a humid summer day, has more inside it than a vacuum can reach.
Before washing, we check what the rug is made of. Wool, cotton, jute, viscose and synthetic rugs each need a different approach, and a quick dye check makes sure the colors will not bleed.
Pet stains are treated during the wash, so the odor goes away instead of being covered up. Moth or insect treatment is available if we find signs of them, which often show up under furniture or along the edges.
Fringe is cleaned and straightened at the end.
Jute and sisal rugs, popular in brownstone kitchens and entries, do not like much water. We tell you honestly if a natural-fiber rug is better spot cleaned than fully washed.
Most rugs are ready in around a week. When the rug comes back, we carry it up, roll it out and set it in place.
