Some of the finest rugs we handle come from Harlem families who have kept the same Persian or Turkish rug in the parlor for forty or fifty years. Others belong to new owners who bought a hand-knotted piece to match a freshly restored brownstone.
Old or new, a hand-knotted rug is wool or silk tied knot by knot onto a cotton or wool foundation. Scrubbing it in place with a rental machine can shrink the foundation, blur the colors and leave soap inside. That is why we take these rugs back to our plant.
We collect the rug from your home for free, wash it by hand, and lay it back down when it is ready.
Every rug gets a full look before anything else. We turn it over, check the foundation threads and the knot density, and write down any worn spots, moth paths or old repairs so you know the starting condition.
Dyes are tested one color at a time with a damp cloth. Deep reds and indigo in older rugs can run, and if one does, we adjust the wash to keep it from spreading.
Dry soil comes out next, using a dusting method that vibrates sand from deep between the knots. On an old parlor rug, this step often removes more dirt than the wash itself.
Our washers work the wool by hand, using gentle products made for it. The fringe is cleaned separately, and the rug dries slowly while lying flat so it keeps its shape.
We are honest about limits. Sun fading by tall front windows and wool lost to moths are permanent. What cleaning gives you is brighter, softer wool and a rug that lasts longer.
Many Harlem parlors are used for gatherings: holiday dinners, church friends after Sunday service, a family party. Those days mean dropped food, spilled punch and a lot of shoes on the rug. Tell us about any spill you remember, even an old one, so we can test that spot before the wash.
Most heirloom rugs return within one to two weeks. Machine-made rugs belong with our regular Harlem rug cleaning.
