Picture the Upper West Side and you probably see two kinds of homes. On the side streets of the West 70s and 80s there are rows of brownstones, many split into duplexes and floor-through apartments. On Central Park West, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive there are solid prewar co-ops with large rooms, long halls and staff at the door. Planning starts with the building. A brownstone floor-through may mean three or four flights of stairs and no elevator. A co-op on West End Avenue may have a service elevator that must be reserved and contractor hours on weekdays only. We ask how your building works when you call and plan the visit from there.
Next comes the material. Prewar apartments here often have herringbone or parquet floors, and many families own wool and hand-knotted rugs. We test fibers and fabrics before cleaning and keep moisture away from wood that should stay dry.
