DUMBO is small, but almost nothing in it is ordinary. Most homes sit inside former factories and warehouses that were turned into lofts, with high ceilings, big windows, exposed brick and wide wood or concrete floors. Newer glass towers near the water add a different kind of apartment, with doormen, package rooms and passenger elevators.

Those two building types call for two different plans. In a converted warehouse we usually work with a freight elevator and a building super, and we bring the van as close as the cobblestones allow. In a newer tower we check in at the front desk, book the service elevator and protect the lobby floor on the way up. Many DUMBO homes also double as work space, so a visit might include a studio rug, an office chair or a sofa where clients sit. We are glad to clean home and work pieces in one trip.

Open floor plans change the job. A rug in a loft is often much larger than one in a typical apartment, and a sectional can run the length of a wall. We ask for rough sizes when you book so we bring enough time, tools and help.

Access is the other big piece. Freight elevators in the old warehouse buildings often need to be reserved, and some buildings only allow contractors during set hours. Send us your building's rules and we schedule around them instead of showing up and hoping for the best.
