Pre-war apartments along the parkway were laid out generously, with long entry halls, separate dining rooms and bedrooms off a corridor. Rugs fill those spaces: a big one under the dining table, a narrow runner down the hallway, a soft one in the kids' room. In the brick houses up the side streets, there is often another rug in a basement den.
Vacuuming keeps the surface tidy, but sand and crumbs sink to the foundation, where a home machine cannot reach. A full soak is the only way to flush them out.

After a color check on each shade, the rug goes into a wash bath matched to its fiber, wool, cotton, jute or synthetic. Spots get hand attention in the bath, and the rinse runs until the water is clear.
Odor from kids' spills and pet accidents hides in the backing and the pad, not just the face. The bath soaks through every layer, which is why the smell leaves with the dirt.
Basement dens on the house blocks tend to be cool and a little damp, and rugs down there can turn musty. Drying a rug completely on our racks resets it. At home, a dehumidifier and a rug pad with good airflow keep the smell from coming back.
Hallway runners in the parkway buildings wear in a straight line where everyone walks. Flipping a runner end to end every season shifts that path and adds years to it.
Plan to be without it for roughly a week. Before drop-off we phone to agree on a time, and if your super likes to know when vendors are coming, we will tell them too.
