The first hour belongs to looking. We flip the rug, count knots on the back, check the foundation threads and the side cords, and mark thin patches, old mends or moth trails. You hear what we see before any cleaning is booked.
Then comes dusting from the back. A rug that has spent twenty or thirty years in one living room can release a small pile of fine grit, and that grit has to leave dry.
We dab every color with a damp cloth. Reds and dark blues are the ones most likely to move, and if they do, the bath water stays cool and the solution mild. The rug is washed by hand, rinsed clear and dried flat with fans.
Fringe is washed and combed straight as part of the job. Moth damage, which shows up as bare tracks in the wool, can be treated so it stops spreading.
Many apartments here are being passed from parents to children, and rugs come out of closets and storage at the same time. A cleaning and check before the rug goes back on a floor shows whether it needs repair first.
Rugs in rooms facing the parkway get filtered light through the trees, which is kinder than full sun. Even so, turning the rug once a year keeps the colors matched.
