Our first step is a slow look at both sides. On the back, the knot pattern tells us how the rug was made and how dense it is. On the front, we mark worn paths, moth bald spots and any old patch jobs, and we share those notes with you.
A damp white cloth is pressed onto each dye. Reds, rusts and deep blues are the colors most likely to move. When one does, the wash is changed to a cooler, faster method that keeps the color in place.
Then comes dusting. A busy family living room pushes fine sand down to the base of the wool, where it grinds the fibers with every footstep. Shaking that out before washing is what keeps an old rug from going thin.
The wash itself is slow handwork with a mild wool shampoo, followed by plenty of clean rinse water and a long, even dry.
