At the plant, we start by checking the fiber and testing the dyes. Wool, cotton, viscose and synthetic rugs each need their own method, and some colors can run if the wrong one is used.

Sand is a real issue for homes near Shore Road Park and the waterfront. Fine grit works into the base of the rug and cuts the fibers each time someone walks on it. A full wash flushes it out in a way vacuuming never will.
Winter brings a different problem. Rock salt from the Fourth Avenue sidewalks and the steps at the R stations comes home on boots and dries into white rings on the rug. Salt pulls in moisture and stiffens wool, so it is worth washing out before spring.
Pet accidents get treated during the wash, not just sprayed on top. That is the only way to take the odor out of the backing for good.
