Every color is then checked for running. A shade that is not stable changes how the rug is washed. After that, dry soil is shaken out of the knots, the rug is hand-washed in cool water, rinsed several times and left to dry slowly.

Rugs kept for years beside a bright front window are often lighter at one end. Removing dirt brightens it, but no cleaning can reverse sun fading, and we point this out at the start so expectations are clear.

Rugs stored rolled in a basement or closet are worth checking for moths, whose larvae eat wool and leave bald patches. Moth damage is treated during the cleaning, and we can suggest better ways to store it.
