Parkchester was planned as a single community. Metropolitan Life built it around 1940 as a large complex of red-brick elevator buildings set among lawns and paths, with the Oval and its fountains in the middle and shops spread through the grounds. Most Parkchester apartments are reached by elevator, which makes it easy to bring equipment up. The crew uses a cart, keeps the corridor clear and pads the corners of the elevator and doorways so nothing is scuffed on the way in.
