Carpets, rugs, couches and mattresses inside, plus the car at the curb and the stoop outside.
Mott Haven is the southern tip of the Bronx, just over the Harlem River from East Harlem. Three kinds of homes sit side by side here. Around Alexander Avenue there are nineteenth-century brick rowhouses with tall stoops and iron railings. Mixed in are five- and six-story walk-ups from the early 1900s. And along the waterfront and near the bridges, a run of new rental towers has gone up, with lobbies, package rooms and freight elevators.
We plan a visit around whichever one you live in. A rowhouse usually means a steep stoop and a tight inside stair. A walk-up means hauling equipment up a few flights by hand. A tower means a booked elevator and a call to the management office first.

Hand-washed wool and silk, with every dye tested first.
The towers by the river often ask that vendors be scheduled ahead, with a fixed window for the service elevator. Give us the building's name when you call. We will check what the office expects and arrive inside that window.
The old rowhouses are a different story. Many were divided into floor-through apartments, so the stair is shared and the hall is narrow. We put protection down from the front door, keep our hoses tidy so neighbors can pass, and finish the loud part quickly.
Plenty of people here rent, and calls spike around the first of the month. If you are moving, one trip can cover the carpet, the mattress and the couch, so the apartment is done in a day. Say what is staying and what is going, and we quote all of it together.
When the crew arrives, they walk the rooms with you, point at the stains and pet spots, and explain the plan and the timing. Nothing starts until you know what will happen.
The 6 train runs below East 138th Street, stopping at Third Avenue–138th Street, Brook Avenue and Cypress Avenue. On the west side, the 4 and 5 stop at 138th Street–Grand Concourse. Lots of residents ride into Manhattan for work, so our earliest and latest time slots are the first to fill.
Several bridges land here from Manhattan, and the Major Deegan and the Bruckner Expressway frame the neighborhood. That helps our vans get in quickly, though rush hour can back things up. You get an honest arrival window, and a call from us if traffic on the bridges holds us up.
Curb space is scarce around 138th Street and the new buildings, so we plan for alternate-side days and loading zones. From St. Mary's Park down to the river, booking works the same way: phone 1-800-589-4364 or fill in the quote form.
