Armchairs, dining sets, padded headboards and benches cleaned on the spot in Mott Haven apartments and rowhouses.
By upholstery we mean the fabric pieces other than the sofa: a reading chair by the window, a set of dining chairs, a padded headboard, a storage bench at the end of the bed. In compact Mott Haven apartments these get daily use, and it shows first on armrests, seat fronts and the place a head leans back.
Everything is cleaned where it stands. Nothing needs to travel down a walk-up stair or squeeze around the tight landing of a rowhouse.
We begin each piece by reading its care tag and testing a hidden patch, so the right method is chosen before any cleaning starts.
Most furniture tags carry a letter. W allows water-based cleaning, S calls for a solvent, WS allows either, and X means vacuum only. We follow that letter and then dab a hidden area to be sure the dye stays put. With no tag, we test in several places.
Then the loose dust and crumbs are vacuumed away, each stain gets its own pre-treatment, and the fabric is cleaned in a way that suits it. Velvet, linen, microfiber and cotton blends behave differently, so there is no one-size setting.
Dining chairs are one of the most common requests in family homes here, since they catch every spill and get dragged around all day. A whole set can be done in a single visit, and they are ready to sit on again quickly.
Padded headboards slowly darken from hair and skin oils. We lift that oil gently and keep the moisture low so the foam behind the fabric stays dry.
Some of the newer rentals by the Harlem River are let furnished, and others fill up with pieces tenants have carried from home to home. If the owner's furniture is in the unit, a cleaning before you leave can smooth the final inspection.
Plan on a few hours of drying. An open window or a fan speeds it up, and it is best to keep pets off until the fabric is dry.
