Area Rug Cleaning in Mott Haven, Bronx

So many Mott Haven homes have bare wood, especially the walk-ups and the restored rowhouses, that area rugs do a lot of work here. There is usually a large one under the coffee table, a runner down the hall and a small mat by the bed, each one catching grit before it scratches the floor.

Cleaning a rug where it lies only reaches the surface. The sand that settles down at the base of the pile needs a real wash to come out, so we take the rug away and do it at our plant.

There is no charge to collect or return it. The crew rolls it up, carries it out by stair or elevator, and brings it back up once it is finished.

Step one at the plant is a dry dusting. After a few years on the floor a rug can hold a surprising weight of grit, and removing it dry keeps it from becoming mud during the wash.

Step two is a dye test. Even low-cost rugs sometimes have colors that bleed, so if a test shows a weak dye we adjust the method. After that the rug is washed, rinsed until the water runs clear, and hung on a rack so both sides dry evenly.

Pet accidents happen on apartment rugs all the time, and the lasting smell usually lives in the backing rather than the top fibers. We treat both layers so it does not return on the next warm day.

Lots of the new rentals by the water come with no carpet at all. If you just moved in and bought a big rug for the living room, a wash once a year keeps it bright, and a pad underneath stops it from creeping and wearing.

With the Bruckner Expressway and the busy avenues so close, road grime lands on everything, rugs by the windows included. Rotating the rug a few times a year spreads the wear and the sun.

Expect it back in about a week. We phone ahead to choose a drop-off time that suits you and, if your building needs it, an elevator booking.
