What sets a hand-knotted piece apart is how it was built. The pile is tied to a cotton or wool foundation knot by knot, and the colors may come from natural dyes. Those dyes can bleed if the rug is soaked in hot water.

After the survey, a moist white towel is pressed onto every shade in the design. Any trace of color on the towel means the bath will be cooler and briefer and the drying quicker.
Grit removal is next. Years on an oak floor in this neighborhood pack the knots with sandy dust, so the rug is turned face down and beaten and vacuumed from the back until little more comes out.
Only then does the bath start: lukewarm water, a gentle wool shampoo worked in by hand, repeated rinsing and a slow dry lying flat with fans moving air across it.
Radiators can dry out the edge of a rug that sits too close to them, and steam pipes sometimes leak onto floors in older buildings. Water stains and brittle edges are common, and we will tell you what can and cannot be improved.
Moths are drawn to wool in quiet corners, under beds and behind furniture. If we find damage, we treat the rug and show you where it is.
