Fordham is home to families from dozens of countries, and plenty of them hold on to a rug that means something: a wedding gift, a piece bought on a trip home, a runner that has followed the family from one apartment to the next. In a Concourse living room it may well be the most valuable thing in the house.
Pieces like that are knotted by hand from wool or silk and colored with dyes that may not tolerate heat or strong detergent. A hand bath is the only safe way to clean them.
We collect and return the rug at no cost to you.
When the rug reaches us, it is spread out on a clean table for a careful look. We confirm the fiber and weave, turn it over to find old repairs or moth trails, and note fraying ends. That condition report comes to you before we start.
Color testing comes next. Deep reds and indigo blues are the shades most prone to bleeding, so they are tested with extra care, and the wash is changed if anything moves.
The rug is then placed face down and vibrated and beaten to shake out compacted grit. In a busy home, that hidden grit is what cuts the knots and wears a rug thin.
Washing is done on a sloped floor with lukewarm water and a pH-neutral rug soap, pushed through the pile with soft squeegees. Several rinses follow, then the rug rests flat on a drying rack until it is bone dry.
Kilims and other flat-weaves have no pile and can twist out of square if they are handled roughly. They are blocked and dried carefully so the edges stay true.
Pet stains are treated during the bath. Very old urine stains can permanently shift the dye color, and if that has happened we will say so rather than promise a miracle.
Brushing and cleaning the tassels is part of the job. Loose ends and worn selvages can be repaired, and we can walk you through the options.
Between washes, rotate the rug every year or so and vacuum it without the beater bar, which can pull on hand-tied knots.
