Across Riverdale, it is common for a fine rug to have lain on the same parquet for thirty or forty years. Some were bought new long ago, some passed down, some carried across an ocean when a family settled here. A large Persian under the dining table or a silk prayer rug in a quiet bedroom is a familiar sight in this neighborhood.
Each one was knotted on a loom by a weaver, row after row, in wool or silk, and many were colored with plant and mineral dyes that can wander if treated carelessly. Running a steam wand across it in the living room would be the wrong move.
Our team rolls it up, drives it to the plant and spreads it out again in your room when it is done, all at no charge.
When a rug reaches our plant, a specialist studies it first: the fiber, the knot count, the foundation threads, and any worn areas, moth trails, loose selvages or earlier repairs. You get a condition report before any washing begins.
Every color is blotted with a damp white cloth to see if it moves. An unstable dye changes the plan, with cooler water, a shorter wash and faster drying. After that the rug is dusted from the back to shake out the grit lodged in the knots, washed by hand, rinsed until clear and dried slowly lying flat.
Rugs that face big windows over the Hudson usually have one sun-faded end. Turning a rug around every year or so evens out the light, and we can show you which end has taken the most.
Moths love wool that sits in the dark under a sofa or rolled in a closet. When larvae or chewed spots turn up, we treat the rug and show you how far the damage reaches.
Silk is the most delicate fiber we see. It loses strength when wet, so silk rugs get less water, a slower process and extra testing.
Grooming the fringe and tassels is part of every job. When the fringe is coming apart or the edges are unraveling, we explain the repair choices and what they would involve.
A wool rug only needs a full wash every few years if it is vacuumed regularly and kept off direct sun. We can suggest a schedule based on where it lies and how much traffic it gets.
