It begins with a close look at the back: the knot count, the weave, worn patches and the state of the fringe. Each main color is then dabbed with a damp white cloth to check for bleeding.

Dry soil is removed before any washing. Wool holds fine sand at the base of the pile, and every footstep grinds it against the fibers. Getting it out first adds years to the rug.

The wash is done by hand with a mild, wool-safe solution, working with the lay of the pile. Silk gets an even lighter touch. After rinsing, the rug dries flat in a controlled room so it keeps its shape.

In older Belmont apartments, rugs often sit by a hot radiator or a sunny front window. Heat dries wool out, and sun bleaches one side. When we bring the rug back, we can suggest a better spot or a pad.
