Formal living and dining rooms are still common in Country Club houses, and a hand-tied carpet usually sits at the center of them. Some were chosen when the house was first furnished, years ago. Others came from parents or grandparents and carry a lot of meaning.
Because they are hand-knotted and often colored with natural dyes, these rugs can be damaged by hot water, strong detergent or aggressive machines. They need patient hand-washing.
Our van takes the piece to the plant, where it is cleaned without machines, and then brings it home. There is no fee for the driving.
A formal room that is used only on special days still gathers dust. Fine particles fall through the pile and settle at the base. Before any water, the rug is dusted from the back until little more comes out.
Then comes the color check. A damp cloth is pressed on each dye, with extra attention to deep reds and navy blues. If anything moves, we wash with cooler water and a milder solution.
The wash itself is done by hand: the rug is wetted, the solution is worked gently into the pile in the direction of the nap, and it is rinsed until the water is clear. Drying happens on a flat floor in moving air.
The tassels at each end get cleaned and straightened. If moths have left bare tracks, which often happens under heavy furniture that is rarely moved, the wool is treated to stop further damage.
Big windows facing the bay are a pleasure to live with, but strong light slowly fades wool. We note any fading when we inspect, so you know what to expect after cleaning.
A cool, damp basement is a risky place to store a fine rug. If yours has been kept downstairs, we check it for mildew, smell and weak spots before it goes back into use.
A rug pad makes a difference in a house with hardwood floors. It keeps the rug from sliding, cushions the knots from heels and chair legs, and lets air move under the rug. If yours has none or an old crumbling one, ask us about it at pickup.
