Walk into a typical Country Club house and the floors tell you a lot. Oak or tile runs through the entry and the main rooms, and rugs mark out each space: one under the dining table, one in front of the fireplace, a runner in the hall, and often a washable rug by the door to the yard.
A family home near the water is tough on rugs. Damp shoes come in from the lawn, bare feet come in from the beach, and the dog comes in from everywhere. Most of that ends up deep in the pile, where vacuuming never reaches.
We collect the rug from your house, give it a full bath at our plant, and drop it back off. The driving both ways is free.
Late spring is a popular time to send rugs in. Winter leaves rock salt and grit from the driveway in the entry rug, and a heavy rug in the living room has spent months under holiday traffic. Cleaned and rolled before summer, they come back ready for the season.
Summer brings sand. After a day at Orchard Beach or on a boat in the bay, fine sand sneaks in on towels and feet. In the plant we shake each rug from the back before washing, and the amount that drops out of a family room rug can fill a dustpan.
Every color then gets a quick bleed test with a damp cloth. Once we know the dyes are safe, the rug is soaked, worked by hand where it is stained, rinsed, and hung in moving air until it is dry all the way through.
Holiday meals are hard on dining room rugs. Gravy, red wine and candle wax all land under the table. Telling us where the spills are helps us treat them in the bath.
Sunrooms and porches that look out over the water get a lot of reflected light. Rugs there can fade on one side. Washing brightens them, but faded color does not return, so turning the rug every few months is the best protection.
A rug kept in a cool basement den can pick up a stale smell. Full drying at the plant usually clears it, and a dehumidifier at home keeps it from coming back.
Most rugs are home again in about a week. Hand-knotted pieces follow a gentler process, described on our oriental rug cleaning in Country Club page.
