Living by the bay is hard on a car, though. Salt air settles on the paint and glass, gulls and other birds leave droppings, sand comes home from the beach, and in winter the roads are covered with salt.

Summer is sand season. It works its way under the seats, into the seat rails and deep into the carpet, where a gas-station vacuum cannot reach. We use crevice tools and an air blower to lift it out, then vacuum the carpet, mats and trunk.
Then the cabin surfaces: dash, vents, console, cup holders and door trim are all wiped clean. Cloth upholstery is scrubbed and the dirty water pulled back out with an extractor; leather is wiped with a mild product and nourished afterward.
On the outside, a hand wash removes the salty film from the bay air, followed by wheels, tires and glass. A coat of wax adds shine and makes bird droppings and pollen easier to wash off later.
If you tow a boat, the vehicle that backs down the ramp sees salt water on its wheels and lower body. We pay extra attention there, since salt left on metal leads to rust.
Winter leaves its own residue: a white crust on the rubber mats and rocker panels from salted roads. A spring visit dissolves it and rinses the carpet underneath.

Convertibles and cars kept near the water often have a light haze on the inside of the windshield. Glass gets cleaned on both sides with a streak-free product, so night driving on the Hutch or the Bruckner is easier on the eyes.
