The cleaning itself is a hand bath with a mild shampoo suited to wool or silk, then a thorough rinse. Drying is where waterfront homes need the most care: the rug stays in our drying room until the foundation is bone dry, so no mildew can start.

Lost color from sunlight is permanent, but turning the rug around every few months shares the light evenly. A breathable pad underneath also lets air move, which helps in a humid house.

Rugs put away for the winter in a basement or a shut porch are exposed to damp and moths. Clean them before storage and wrap them in cotton rather than plastic.
