Springs has drawn painters, makers and collectors for generations, and it shows on the floors. A lot of homes here have at least one handmade rug: a nomadic piece with uneven, hand-dyed colors, a Persian that has been in the family for decades, a worn favorite that nobody would think of replacing.
Rugs like that are never put through a machine. Our driver brings yours to the shop, where a technician looks at the weave and the foundation, confirms whether the yarn is wool or silk, tests each color, and only then begins washing by hand.
A weaver built your rug by hand, row after row, over months. That is why such rugs can outlive their owners, and also why harsh soaps and rough brushing do them real harm. Our wash uses mild solutions and plenty of clean rinse water.
Tribal rugs in particular often have colors that were dyed in small batches. Some are stable and some are not. Testing each one is how we avoid bleeding.
In a quiet room or a house closed for the winter, moths can get to work unnoticed. Moth and bug larvae are treated during the wash, and any bare spots are shown to you before we start.
Fine sand from the bay works down into the pile and slowly cuts the wool. Only a full hand wash flushes it out.
Shady, humid houses can leave wool smelling stale or spotted with mildew. Both are checked for and handled.
Fringe gets cleaned and brushed out straight. Loose or fraying ends are noted for you so you can plan a repair.
After washing, the rug lies flat to dry, slowly. Within roughly seven days it returns to your living room.
Studio floors are hard on rugs: paint drips, clay dust, rolling chairs. If your rug has spent time in a workspace, tell us, and the technician will check those marks closely.
A wash brings back color and clears out years of grit, but sun fading and worn pile stay. You will get a straight picture before we begin.
