Old East Hampton houses often hold old rugs. A Persian that has been in the front parlor since a grandparent's time, a Caucasian runner in a long hallway, a silk prayer rug in a study. Newer homes sometimes have fine rugs chosen by a designer.
These rugs can last for generations, but a few mistakes can shorten that. A strong cleaner can make the reds run, too much water can shrink the wool, and beach sand left in the base slowly cuts the knots.
Our approach is to test first, then wash each rug by hand in a way that fits it.
Turning the rug over tells us a lot: knot density, whether it was tied by hand or loomed, and how the edges were finished. Each answer changes the plan.
Pile and foundation materials come next, since silk, wool and cotton warps each set their own rules.
Dyes are tested for bleeding. Natural dyes in older rugs and some synthetic dyes in newer ones can both be sensitive.
Deep grit comes out with dusting before washing. A rug from a house near the ocean often drops a startling amount of sand.
Hand washing follows, using mild products, and with silk or fragile pieces we slow right down.
Fringes are combed out and cleaned at no added cost.
Many owners store fine rugs over the winter or send them to the city. Cleaning before storage helps, because moths are drawn to soiled wool.
When the rug comes home, we lay it back in place with its pad.
Wide-plank pine and oak floors in older village homes can be uneven. A good pad keeps a fine rug from wearing on the high spots, so when we return it we check the pad and let you know if it should be replaced.
Some fine rugs here hang on a wall or lie in a gallery-style room where nobody walks. They still gather dust and need cleaning every few years, just more gently.
