In a real hand-knotted rug, every knot was tied one at a time around the warp threads. Turn it over and the pattern shows almost as clearly as on the front. Strong cleaners and heavy brushing can loosen that work, so the wash is gentle and the rinse is long.
Older or hand-dyed colors sometimes bleed. Testing them first is how we decide how much water and which solution are safe.
Moths love dark, quiet places: the wool under a bed or a big sectional that never moves. Treatment for larvae and insects is built into the wash, and any bare patches are pointed out to you beforehand.
Fine sand is the slow killer of rugs near the shore. It slips between the knots and acts like sandpaper on the wool every time someone walks across. Only a thorough hand wash really flushes it out.
Dog or cat accidents on wool are tricky because urine can shift dyes. Those rugs get extra testing and a straight answer about likely results.
The fringe is the rug's warp threads coming out of the ends. It is washed and combed, and we let you know if the ends are starting to unravel.
Drying happens flat and without rushing. About a week after we collect it, the rug is back on your floor.
Between washes, rotate the rug every year or so and vacuum it without the beater bar. Both help it wear evenly and last longer.
