Old houses tend to hold old rugs. In Quogue's shingle-style homes, it is common to find a faded Persian in the library, a long antique runner in the hall, or a rug that has been in the family as long as the house.
These rugs face two summer problems. Big windows let strong sun fall on the same spot every afternoon, and salt air and humidity keep the wool slightly damp for months. In a closed winter house, moths can work quietly under the furniture.
We collect the rug at no charge, wash it by hand at our plant, and bring it home.
Antique rugs often have a history of repairs, low spots in the pile and dyes that were made from plants. Before we touch water, we want to know all of that, so we look at the rug front and back with you at pickup.
Sun fading is common here. Cleaning cannot put color back where the sun took it, but removing the gray film of dirt often makes the fade much less noticeable. We will tell you what to expect.
Every dye is tested on a damp cloth. If a red or blue wants to move, we keep the water cool and the wash short in that area.
Dusting comes before washing. Antique rugs that have been walked on for decades can hold a lot of fine grit at the base, and getting it out protects the wool.
The wash is gentle and by hand, with a wool-safe cleaner and a long rinse, then slow drying flat. We check for moth larvae and treat the rug as part of the service.
We suggest turning these rugs every year or two so the sun and foot traffic spread evenly. A rug pad under the rug also helps it last.
Silk rugs and silk highlights in wool rugs need the most care of all. Silk can lose its shine or bleed if handled roughly, so we use cooler water and a shorter wash.
If a rug lives on the porch or in a sunroom, think about moving it to a shadier room for part of the year. Strong sun through glass is one of the fastest ways to fade natural dyes.
Because each rug is dried slowly, we give a return date at pickup. For newer, machine-made rugs, see area rug cleaning in Quogue.
