At the plant, step one is getting the sand out. We beat and vacuum the rug from the back, and homes near the bay always surprise us with how much falls out.

Then our team checks what the rug is made of. Wool, cotton, polyester, viscose and blends each get a wash that suits them.

Holiday tables leave red wine, tomato sauce, coffee and candle wax; pets leave their own marks. Those spots get worked on first, and a basement rug with a musty smell gets an extra rinse.

Thick shag and plush rugs, which many local living rooms love, hold soil deep in the pile. They need more washing and a longer dry, and our schedule allows for it.

When the rug is back, we carry it in, set it on its pad if there is one, and put the furniture legs back on the rug.
