Next, sand and dry soil are removed from the back of the rug. In homes near the beach, sand settles deep in the knots and cuts the wool fibers over time.

Hand washing follows, with a thorough rinse until the water runs clear. The fringe is cleaned separately by hand.

Drying is slow and even, laid flat, so the rug keeps its shape.

Sun through the front windows can fade one end of a rug over the years. Turning it around every so often lets it age evenly, and we can lay it back in the other direction.
