With the Brooklyn Museum and the Botanic Garden on its doorstep, Prospect Heights draws people who care about craft and design. In many homes here the piece everyone notices is on the floor: an old Persian, a Turkish village rug or a flat-woven kilim.
A rug like that can last a hundred years with good care. Rough cleaning or a soaking with the wrong soap can make the dyes bleed and leave the wool weak.
Our crew carries it out, our team washes it at our facility, and we deliver it once it has dried completely.
Every hand-made rug tells us how it was made, and that decides how we wash it. So our first job, in your living room or at our facility, is a close look: the knots on the back, the wool or silk on the face, the fringe, the side bindings and any patched or thin spots. You hear about anything we find before work starts.
Old natural dyes are the big risk. A red that bleeds into a cream border cannot be undone, so small test spots are checked for color transfer, and the wash water and soap are chosen to keep the colors where they belong.
Hand-knotted rugs trap a surprising amount of fine dust in their knots. Shaking and vacuuming it out from the back, before any water, is one of the most important things we do, because that dust slowly wears through the wool.
The wash itself is done by hand, with a careful rinse so no soap is left behind. Drying happens flat and slowly so the rug holds its shape, and the fringe is hand washed as well.
Thin flat-woven kilims and dhurries can stretch or shift, so they are handled gently and dried flat.
Apartments here often have strong radiator heat in winter and big sunny windows. Dry heat can make old wool brittle, and sun fades one side of a rug. A rug pad, a little distance from the radiator and rotating it every so often all help.
Silk rugs and silk-blend rugs are more delicate than wool. Tell us if you think your rug has silk, and we will check it and explain the safest option before anything else.
When a room has a modern machine-made rug too, it goes through our area rug cleaning. Across Flatbush Avenue, Park Slope homes get the same oriental rug cleaning.
