At the facility, loose grit comes out first, shaken and vacuumed from both faces of the rug. Then we look at the fibers and test whether the colors are stable.

Wool, cotton, jute and synthetic rugs each get their own wash. Viscose, the shiny, silk-look fiber common in apartment rugs, is weak when wet, so it gets the gentlest treatment we have.

Spots are worked on before the main wash. Where pets share a small apartment, urine is the usual problem, and those rugs are soaked longer to get the odor out of the backing.

Nothing comes back until it has been rinsed and dried all the way through. Then we carry it in and set it down where it belongs.
