A Hamptons house rarely has just one rug. Sisal and jute cover the porch, a cotton dhurrie sits in the pool house, there is wool under the living room sofa and a runner going up the stairs. All summer they soak up sand, water and sunscreen.
None of these are washed on your floor. Our crew rolls them up at the house, takes them to our facility, cleans them properly and drives them back. Collection and return cost nothing.
Testing comes before anything else. Plant fibers like sisal and jute do not like much water and can brown or shrink, so they are handled very differently from wool or cotton.
Wool and cotton rugs are soaked in a full-immersion wash. That is the only real way to flush out the sand buried in the foundation, which is what wears a rug out from the inside.
Rugs from a pool house or a screened porch often arrive with mildew from wet towels and damp nights. We treat the mildew and the smell. If the fibers have already started to rot, we say so before doing any work.
Drying happens slowly, with the rug lying flat, so the edges stay square and the shape holds. Expect most rugs back roughly seven days after pickup.
When we bring a rug home, we can fit a new pad if the old one has gone flat or crumbly. On wide-plank floors a good pad stops sliding and spreads the wear.
A lot of owners send their rugs out in October, once the house is shut, and ask for delivery before Memorial Day weekend. Mention it when you book and we will note the dates.
