Not every Montauk house is a sandy cottage. Bigger homes on the hills and older family houses often have hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs in the living room or the main bedroom. They are beautiful, but sand and damp sea air are hard on them.
Sand works like sandpaper on wool pile and the cotton threads beneath it. Moisture in a closed house can weaken those threads and invite moths. A careful hand wash every so often protects the rug from both.

Sand is the first thing to go. Beating and vacuuming the underside lets embedded grit fall out of the knots, and in a beach house there is usually plenty.
Older reds and navy blues bleed most easily, so each shade is blotted with a damp cloth before we decide on soap and water.
The wash itself is slow and by hand, with a mild wool-safe soap and plenty of clean rinse water. The rug then dries flat inside our building, far from the fog, so it does not warp.
Moths love dark, quiet rooms and rugs nobody walks on, which describes many second homes from November to April. Washing before you close up leaves them nothing to feed on.
If the house is rented out, think about rolling a valuable rug up and storing it for the summer, or swap it for a washable rug during rental weeks. We can wash the fine rug in the fall so it goes back down clean when the family returns.
