These rugs are worth caring for, and they are easy to hurt. Strong store-bought cleaners can make dyes run, too much water can shrink wool, and grit left in the base slowly saws through the knots.
Each one is washed by hand using a process picked for that particular rug, and we collect and return it at no charge.
Our first job is to work out how the rug was made. Hand-knotted, hand-tufted and machine-woven rugs all need different handling, and the back of the rug tells us which one we have.
Next we confirm the fibers. Wool is forgiving; silk is not, and it gets the gentlest treatment we have.
Then the dyes are tested, natural and synthetic, to see whether any color might bleed. That result decides how the rug can be washed.
The rug is dusted to release dry soil packed deep in the pile. In a house with kids and pets, there is usually far more than you can see from the top.
All washing is manual. Combing and cleaning the fringe comes standard.
Pet stains on a fine rug are worth treating fast. Urine can change dye colors over time, and the earlier we see it, the better the result tends to be.
Most rugs come home in about a week. If yours needs longer because of age or material, we will say so before we take it.
Older homes in the village center, some with formal dining rooms and front parlors, are where many fine rugs live. Sun through big front windows can fade one side, so turning the rug once a year after cleaning helps it age evenly.
