Kensington has rugs from all over the world. Families from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Central Asia and Eastern Europe have brought hand-knotted rugs with them, and many have been in the family for generations.
Each region makes rugs a little differently, and each one needs to be understood before it gets wet.
That is why fine rugs are only washed by hand here, and only after a close look and a color test.
Afghan and Pakistani rugs are often thick wool with deep reds. Persian pieces may be finer and denser, sometimes with silk accents. Turkish and Caucasian rugs can be lighter and more open. Knowing the type helps us choose the soap, the water and the drying time.
Deep reds and some blues can bleed. A small damp test on each color comes first, and if a dye moves, the wash is changed to keep it steady.
Rugs used for sitting, eating on the floor or prayer collect more than dust. Oils from skin and bits of food settle into the pile, and a careful hand wash with long rinsing lifts them out.
Vacuum beaters chew on fringe over the years. If the ends are wearing away or the last row of knots is loosening, the edge can be secured so the damage stops spreading.
A rug left rolled in a closet for a season is a favorite spot for moths. The back is checked for larvae and bare patches, and a treatment is offered if there is a problem.
Drying is done flat and slowly. Fast heat can shrink wool or make it ripple, so we do not rush it.
Plan on one to two weeks. Larger rugs and any repairs take longer, and we give you a return date at pickup.
Not sure if yours is hand-knotted? Turn a corner over. If the design looks just as sharp on the back, it is very likely hand-made, and the crew will confirm.
In homes where shoes come off at the door, a fine rug stays cleaner, but it still needs a wash every couple of years to clear the oils and dust that build up in the pile.
Factory-made rugs are cleaned through our area rug service instead. Families in Midwood can book hand-washing too.
