Then we check the dyes by pressing a damp white cloth against a corner. If color comes off, we change the plan before the rug ever gets wet.

Next we shake and tap the rug from the back to release packed-in grit, garden soil and pet hair. With a family rug, a surprising amount comes out at this stage.

Washing follows with eco-safe solutions and lots of fresh water, followed by a rinse that leaves no sticky residue behind.

Dining room rugs often need extra stain work: red sauce, olive oil, wine and the crumbs that settle under every chair. Each mark is treated before the main wash.

Playroom rugs get an enzyme treatment for spills and accidents, which removes the source of any odor.

Drying is finished completely. A rug that comes back damp onto an old wood floor can mark the floor and grow a musty smell.
