Some rugs on these blocks arrived with the family that first bought the house. Others were carried home from a trip to Istanbul or found at an auction upstate. Either way, a hand-knotted rug in a Carroll Gardens parlor is usually something people intend to keep for good.
That kind of rug does not belong in a standard wash. Vegetable dyes, a hand-spun pile and a hand-tied foundation can shrink, fade or bleed if the soap is strong or the water is hot.
Our team carries it out, cleans it by hand in a controlled setting and returns it only when every fiber is dry.
When the rug reaches us, we turn it over and study the back. Knot density, the condition of the warp threads, old mends, sun fading on one end and any moth trails all tell us how to treat it, and we share those notes with you.
To see if the dyes will hold, we press a damp white cloth on the darkest reds and blues and watch for transfer. A rug that shows color gets a cooler, faster wash with a fixing rinse.
Decades in a dining room pack the knots with crumbs and grit. We work that out from the back before any washing, which spares the wool from being scrubbed against sand.
The pile is then washed by hand, in the direction it naturally lies, with a wool-safe solution. Silk pieces get even less water and more time.
Fringe often yellows over the years. We wash it separately and comb it straight, though very old cotton fringe may stay a little ivory.
Drying happens flat and slowly. We do not hurry it: a damp rug pressed onto a century-old floor risks staining the wood and souring the wool.
Moths like the quiet corners of a house, such as under a sideboard or in a rarely used guest room. If we find larvae or grazed patches, we can treat the rug so the damage stops.
Many families ask what a rug is worth. We are cleaners, not appraisers, but we can tell you how it was made and what condition it is in.
