Hand-knotted pile hides a lot of fine grit, and removing it before the wash saves the wool from further wear.
Washing is done by hand with mild solutions suited to wool and silk. The fringe is cleaned and combed straight, and pet marks are dealt with separately.
We let drying take as long as it needs. Laying a rug back on old floorboards while it is still damp can harm both.
Moths love rugs that sit under heavy furniture or in a back room nobody uses. We look for larvae and grazing and can treat the piece if needed.
On return the crew can set the rug in place, and we can recommend a pad that keeps it flat and protects the boards.
Long-term care is simple: turn the rug every year or so to even out sun and wear, vacuum the face gently, and keep heavy furniture on coasters to spread the weight.
If we see loose fringe, worn edges or small holes, we will tell you. Catching these early is far easier than fixing them after they spread.
