Families who have been in Co-op City since it opened, or close to it, often brought a fine rug with them from an earlier apartment elsewhere in the city. Others bought one as the centerpiece of a new living room. Either way, it deserves careful handling.
Each one is made from thousands of individual knots, usually in wool and sometimes in silk, and their dyes can run under harsh chemicals or heat. So they are never machine-cleaned. Each one is hand-washed at our plant, after every shade has been tested.
Our crew picks it up from your apartment and brings it back afterward. There is no charge for either trip.
On arrival the rug is examined on both sides. We record the fiber, the knot density, the edges and fringe, and any moth damage or earlier repairs, and we share what we find with you.
Each color is checked for bleeding, and the wash is changed if any shade is unstable. Fine soil is beaten out of the base of the knots, and then it goes into a cool-water hand bath, gets several rinses and is air-dried at an unhurried pace so the foundation stays even.
A rug that has sat in one place for many years may be more worn or lighter at the end that faces the window or the busiest path. Cleaning restores color dulled by dirt but cannot undo wear or sun fading, which we explain before we begin.
Rugs put away rolled in a closet or under a bed can attract moths. We look for signs of them and treat any activity during the wash.
If the rug has fringe that has gone gray or tangled, it is cleaned and combed as part of the job. Fringe that is coming loose can be pointed out for repair.
A good pad under the rug stops sliding and spreads the load of furniture legs. If yours has flattened or crumbled, we can suggest a replacement when the rug returns.
