Oriental Rug Cleaning in Tuckahoe, NY

Many Tuckahoe families own one special rug: a Persian handed down from a grandparent, a wool piece bought on a trip, an older runner that came with the house. These rugs deserve more than a quick surface clean.

We pick up oriental rugs at your door, check how they were made and wash them by hand at our facility. Then we bring them home and lay them back in place.

The first step is to look at the back of the rug. Hand-knotted, hand-tufted and machine-made rugs are built very differently, and the way a rug was made tells us how it should be washed.

We identify the fiber next. Most oriental rugs are wool, some have silk highlights and a few are all silk. Silk needs a much gentler hand, and we will tell you if your rug has any.

Dye testing comes before any water touches the full rug. Natural dyes and some older synthetic dyes can bleed, and a small test in a hidden area shows us how careful we need to be.

Then the rug is washed by hand, not run through a machine. This slow method lifts dirt from the base of the knots and respects the age of the piece.

Fringe on older rugs can be fragile. We clean it gently and tell you about any loose ends or worn spots we notice, so you can decide what to do next.

After washing, the rug is dried slowly and completely. Wool holds water deep in the knots, and drying too fast or too little can cause problems, so we never rush this step.

Everyday rugs can go through our area rug service on the same pickup, and the rest of our work is listed on our Tuckahoe page.
