Oriental Rug Cleaning in Chelsea, NYC

Plenty of Chelsea residents own one rug that has followed them through every move: a family Persian, a Turkish piece bought on a trip, or something found at an estate sale and loved ever since.

Such rugs are knotted from wool or silk and colored with dyes that may run, so machine scrubbing is off the table. We confirm the fiber, check each color and then clean the rug by hand at our facility.

The job begins with a close look. Our team checks the knots and foundation from the back, notes any old repairs, loose binding or thin areas, and walks you through it before cleaning starts.

Next, each color is tested with a damp cloth. If a red or indigo shows any sign of moving, the cleaning is adjusted so it stays where the weaver put it.

The rug is then washed by hand, rinsed until the water comes away clear and dried flat at an unhurried pace. Afterward the pile is brushed in its natural direction so it lies as it was woven. Expect it back within about seven days.

Loft windows in converted warehouses are huge, and the light that comes through them is strong. One side of a rug can fade years before the other, so rotate it now and then.

Moths love wool that is left undisturbed under a bed or a heavy sofa. Bare tracks or small cocoon-like cases in the pile mean it is time to ask for a moth treatment.

Vacuums are hard on fringe. Run the machine across the rug rather than over the ends, and leave the fringe to us.
