Then we use hot water extraction. The machine sends a hot cleaning rinse into the carpet and pulls it back out at once, along with the loosened soil. In row houses we run the hose carefully up the stairs and keep it away from the woodwork.
Garden-level apartments and basement playrooms can feel damp in summer. We extract as much water as we can, and opening a window or running a fan helps the carpet dry in a few hours.
Newer condo buildings along 4th Avenue more often have wall-to-wall carpet in bedrooms and halls. There we book the service elevator if the building asks for it, protect the hallway floor and keep our machine close to the apartment door.
