When a rug arrives, we check its fiber, backing, edges and colors. Wool, cotton, viscose and synthetic rugs all need different treatment. Viscose, often sold as art silk, is especially delicate and can be damaged by too much water, so we handle it with extra care.
We then shake and beat out the dry soil. Rugs from homes on wooded lots usually hold fine dirt and plant debris deep in the pile, and removing it first protects the fibers during washing.
Next is a full wash and rinse. Stains and pet spots are treated during the wash. After that the rug dries in a controlled space so it does not shrink, warp or develop a musty smell.
A wool rug that spent time in an attic, a carriage house or a cellar may have moths; ask us about treatment.
Most rugs come back in about a week. We can bring a new rug pad if the old one is worn, which also protects your wood floors from scratches.
Several rugs from one home can go in the same trip, which is handy before the holidays or when guests are coming for the summer.
A rug in a sunny room by the harbor will fade unevenly over time. Turn it around once or twice a year, and keep plants in pots off the rug, since water that seeps out of a pot can stain the rug and rot the floor beneath it.
