Once it reaches the plant, the rug is sorted by what it is made of. Wool, cotton flat-weaves, jute and viscose all clean differently. Viscose is the tricky one: it looks like silk but turns dull and rough if it is scrubbed wet, so it gets a much gentler wash.
After soaking and washing, the rug is rinsed until the water runs clear and dried lying flat. Flat drying is what keeps a rug from cupping at the edges.
Pet accidents are handled in the bath itself. The urine has soaked into the backing, and only a full wash reaches it.
