A hand-knotted rug on a restored parquet floor is about as Bed-Stuy as a parlor gets. Some of these rugs came with the house when it was bought, some were passed down in the family, and some were found at a flea market and carried home with pride.
Old, hand-made rugs need a slower, softer wash than machine-made ones. The wool can be dry and brittle, natural dyes can move in water, and the fringe is the end of the rug's own warp threads, not a sewn-on trim.
Every oriental rug we take in is washed by hand. Collection and return are free, and we handle the stoop both ways.
Rugs that sit on old wood floors also pick up fine grit from the gaps between boards. That grit acts like sandpaper on the knots every time someone walks across the room, so a periodic hand-wash protects the rug as well as cleaning it.
Back at the plant, the rug is turned over first. The back shows us the knot count, whether it was hand-tied or loomed, and any old repairs. Then we feel the pile to judge if it is wool, silk or a mix.
Each strong color, especially reds and dark blues, is tested for bleeding before the rug goes in the water. If a dye runs, we cool the water, shorten the wash and use a dye-safe rinse.
Washing is done by hand with a soft brush and mild, eco-safe soap, worked with the direction of the pile. The rug is rinsed many times and then dried flat and slowly, never with strong heat.
Parlor rugs in a south-facing bay window often fade on one end, and wool next to a radiator can get dry. We cannot add color back, but removing the gray film of soil helps the pattern show again and evens out the look.
Fringe is washed and combed straight by hand. If we find moth damage or thin spots, we show you before the wash. Machine-made rugs go through our regular area rug process in Bed-Stuy instead.
