Upholstered Headboards, Ottomans and Benches: How to Clean the Small Pieces Everyone Forgets

The sofa gets attention. The headboard, the ottoman and the bench at the foot of the bed usually do not. Here is how to care for them and how they are cleaned in place.

The short answer

Headboards, ottomans and benches get dirty from skin, hair products, feet, trays and pets, and they cannot go in a washer. Vacuum them often, blot spills right away and check the cleaning code on the tag before you use any product. A professional can deep clean them in place, with a method chosen for the fabric.

When people ask us about upholstery cleaning NYC, they almost always mean the sofa. Then the technician walks into the bedroom and sees a fabric headboard with a dark band right where heads rest, or a tufted ottoman in the living room that has been a footrest, a coffee table and a dog bed at the same time.

Most people know Green Choice for green rug and upholstery cleaning in NYC and the suburbs. Family-owned since 2005, we clean these small pieces the same way we clean a sofa: inspection, a test spot, non-toxic products and careful drying.

01. Why small upholstered pieces get dirty differently

A sofa gets dirty mostly where you sit. Small pieces collect dirt in more focused spots, and the soil is often oily rather than dusty. A headboard is touched by hair and skin all night. An ottoman gets feet, plates and spilled drinks. A bench gets bags, coats and boots.

That oily soil is why a quick wipe often makes things worse: water alone spreads oil into a wider gray patch, and many store sprays leave a sticky film that pulls in more dirt.

02. Fabric headboards: the dark band at pillow height

Look at a fabric headboard from the side of the bed and you will often see a darker band about where pillows sit. It comes from hair oil, styling products, night creams and skin. In small NYC bedrooms with the bed against a radiator wall, warm air bakes those oils in faster.

A headboard bolted to a bed frame can often be pulled out a few inches so the edges can be reached. A wall-mounted or tall channel-tufted headboard is cleaned right on the wall, with the floor and wall protected.

03. Ottomans: footrest, table and pet bed in one

Small pieces get the same careful cleaning as a sofa.

A cocktail ottoman in a Park Slope living room or a Westchester family room is often the most used piece of furniture in the house. Feet rest on it every evening, trays land on it and pets nap on it while you are at work. On storage ottomans, hands open the lid all day.

Common problems are a gray, shiny top where feet rest, rings from cups set down without a tray, crumbs and pet hair packed into tufting and seams, and odor from a pet that likes the warm spot. Cream linen and pale chenille show it fast.

Use a tray for drinks, put a throw on top if the dog naps there, and vacuum the seams and sides, not only the top.

04. Benches and accent chairs: the quiet traffic spots

Entry benches in Long Island mudrooms and Brooklyn brownstone hallways see wet coats, school bags and boots from fall to spring. Bedroom benches catch clothes and laptops. Accent chairs look clean from across the room but show darker arms up close.

Tip: take a photo of the tag before you clean

The label is often underneath or on the back. A photo saves you crawling under the bench every time.

05. Read the cleaning code before you use any product

Most upholstered furniture carries a cleaning code. According to this guide to upholstery cleaning codes, W means a water-based cleaner is fine, S means dry cleaning agents only, WS means both are safe, and X means vacuum only, with no cleaning solution of any kind.

Flat-packed pieces often have no tag, and vintage benches may have been recovered in another fabric. Then treat the fabric as delicate until a test spot proves otherwise.

06. Home mistakes that leave rings and stains

Most damage to small pieces comes from good intentions:

Soaking the fabric

Too much water reaches the padding and leaves a brown ring as it dries.

Scrubbing hard

Rubbing fuzzes velvet, chenille and linen and spreads the stain.

Ignoring the code

A water cleaner on an S fabric can leave a lasting mark.

Leaving soap behind

Residue feels sticky and makes the spot dirty again fast.

For accidents from pets, our older guide to pet stains and odor explains why odor can stay in the padding after the surface looks clean.

07. How we clean them in place

Small pieces do not need to leave the room. Our sofa cleaning crews use the same tools, with more detail work around buttons and piping.

  1. Inspect and read the tag. We check the fabric, code and seams and tell you what is likely to come out.
  2. Protect the area. Floors, walls and bedding around the piece are covered.
  3. Dry soil removal. Vacuuming pulls dust and hair out of the tufting.
  4. Pre-treat the oily areas. A non-toxic, eco-safe pre-treatment goes on the pillow band and ottoman top.
  5. Clean with the right method. Gentle hot water extraction for fabrics that allow it, or a low-moisture method for delicate ones.
  6. Groom and dry. The nap is brushed in one direction and air is moved so the piece dries evenly.
"On a headboard, the dirt is mostly oil. You lift oil with the right pre-treatment and patience, not with more water." — Green Choice cleaning tip

08. Doing it in the same visit as the sofa or mattress

A mattress and headboard are often done in one bedroom visit.

A headboard is the natural partner of the mattress in front of it. Many households book mattress cleaning and the headboard together, so the room is cleared only once.

In the living room, the ottoman usually goes with the sofa and the rug under them. At the end of October our crew cleaned a two-seat sofa and a rug in one Harlem apartment visit, which is a typical small-space combination.

If the bedroom carpet needs it too, our carpet cleaning service can be done in the same appointment; most carpets are ready to walk on in 4 to 6 hours.

09. Drying and getting the room back

Drying time depends on the fabric, the method and the room. Thick tufted pieces take longer than flat panels. Run a fan and keep pets and kids off until it is dry to the touch.

Honest expectations

Fresh soil, hair oil, food and drink spots usually lift well. Old dye loss, sun fading, worn fabric and some very old stains may only lighten. We tell you which is which before any work begins, and the price is confirmed with you before we start.

10. Upholstery cleaning in your area

In the city, we serve apartments across Manhattan, including upholstery cleaning on the Upper West Side, and homes across Brooklyn, including Park Slope upholstery cleaning. In Queens and the Bronx, we clean small pieces in Jackson Heights and offer upholstery cleaning in Belmont.

North of the city, we serve upholstery cleaning in Tarrytown and nearby towns. On Long Island, our Nassau County service area includes area rug cleaning in Hempstead for the rug that sits under that ottoman, and our area rug cleaning covers every other rug in the house. For a room-by-room view of apartment furniture, read the older upholstery cleaning guide.

Headboards, ottomans and benches: common questions

Can an upholstered headboard be cleaned without removing it?

Yes. Most headboards are cleaned right where they are, with the wall, floor and bedding protected.

What causes the dark band on a fabric headboard?

Mostly hair oil, styling products, creams and skin oils pressed into the fabric where heads rest.

How do I know which cleaner is safe for my ottoman?

Check the tag for the cleaning code. W allows water-based cleaners, S means dry cleaning agents only, WS allows both and X means vacuum only. With no tag, test a hidden spot first or ask a professional.

Can pet odor be removed from an ottoman?

Often it can be reduced a lot, but odor in the padding may need more than surface cleaning. We tell you what to expect first.

Can small pieces be cleaned in the same visit as the sofa?

Yes. Headboards, ottomans, benches and chairs are usually added to a sofa, mattress or carpet visit, and the price is confirmed with you before we start.
